shooting was my third EP as angel jelly. originally i wanted this project to be an album, with more introspective themes and focusing more on the "prettier" aspects of electronic music. i had more demos i wanted to finish and bigger plans for a photoshoot associated with it. at some point, i got stuck on a few of the demos and decided to release it as a 4 track EP. i regret this a little bit— i think this project is really good and would have benefitted from being a bit more fleshed out. i also didn't really promo the album a lot. it sucks a little bit because this is probably my current favorite release of mine.
"the flower i'm looking for" is probably the most guitar-forward angel jelly song. i honestly love how it sounds. i also love the songwriting. if it's not clear- it's a song about yearning for something you can never get back. and learning to live with that. that's kind of the overarching theme of the EP— learning to make peace with loss and change. i definitely think this is clear on "i love my friends" too. it's pretty straightforwardly about how grateful i am for the life and friends i have now, but how with that love comes the looming threat that one day it's probably going to change. margaux played the viola and i absolutely adore her sections. when i finished that song i literally listened back and cried— i think it's the only song of my own that i've ever cried to.
i also love the two longer songs on this album. "intact [cause + effect]" is kind of this slow build- starting with soft four on the floor and switching between grooves and sparse passages until it actually drops after 4 minutes. the last drop samples the first song i ever released as angel jelly, "like she's messing with string". lando helped me a ton with that section and i think it's such a satisfying payoff to the song.
"consistency" is the last song and easily my favorite. it samples xion's theme from kh358/2days. i was sooooo inspired by kingdom hearts/simple and clean planitb remix/linkin park aesthetically on this track lol. i feel like they all come through pretty clearly. i love my vocal performances on this song and loveeeee the structure and energy. idk. it's just awesome. i think it's a perfect ending to this ep.
